The story below is Nancy Deng’s experience on being a low-income student:
Nancy lives in a single-parent household with her mother and brother. With a single-parent she understands the struggles of being a low-income student. Nancy’s older brother is a current college student and her mother works hard to help provide his tuition. However, with a sibling Nancy worries about the financial burden put on her mother for paying for both her and her brothers tuition. Therefore, Nancy works hard in school by taking on extracurricular's and academics. She focuses on maintaining good grades and taking the most vigorous courses, while also trying to better the community through volunteer and service. Nancy wants to be able to have her hard work pay off so that she can help repay her mother for everything she's provided and lessen the financial burden that her mother had to carry for so long. As a low-income student Nancy knows what it’s like to have financial barriers, she joined the SupplyHopeInfo team in order to use her experience and advantages to help others. She understands that though she is low-income there are people who are less fortunate than her who don’t have the same education or materials. Nancy strives to make change within her community and will continue to do so.
Nancy is a rising high school junior who runs cross country and track, and also loves learning about science and math. In her free time she enjoys watching movies and journaling.
