The story is from Vicky Huang who talks about her experience being a low income student and preparing for college.
For many low income students like Vicky, special tutoring and SAT prep is not an option. The cost of it is simply too high for many families to afford, which puts them at a disadvantage in school and preparing for college. On top of this, Vicky finds that self studying is not an effective method for her because she gets easily distracted. That’s why Vicky reached out to her school counselor for help. Her counselor suggested that she sign up for Minds Matter, a free program that helps low income students through SAT prep and funding for summer programs. Minds Matter has provided Vicky with a better studying environment, which in turn has made her feel more motivated in her preparation for college. She has also been able to discover what her true passion in life is.
A piece of advice that Vicky has for other low income students is to “take advantage of your counselors and school resources because they are there to help you succeed”.
Vicky is an upcoming senior at George Washington High School and in her free time, she likes going out with her friends and exploring the city. Something she is really passionate about is raising awareness for current service members and veterans. Her overall goal is to be someone others can look up to and to be a better citizen for my community.
